This course uses American Heart Association guidelines to provide a systematic approach to dealing with a cardiopulmonary emergency or sudden death. Includes, but not limited to, myocardial infarction, respiratory arrest with a pulse, witnessed VF adult cardiac arrest, airways management and testing, mega VF:refractory VF/pulseless VT, pulseless electrical activity, strip recognition and testing, asystole, bradycardia, unstable tachycardia-cardioversion, and stable tachycardia. Certified Nursing Assistant: Theory and Clinical
As a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), you are on the front lines of patient care and provide services that are critical to daily operations in healthcare settings. This course, approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON), provides training in anatomy and physiology, life span development, infection control, taking vital signs, and a number of patient care skills. There is a strong focus on care of the elderly and chronic care. To increase employment opportunities in a wide variety of healthcare settings, the program has been expanded to also focus on acute care and to add more depth to the topics of home care, mental health, professionalism, cultural competence, and legal and ethical issues in healthcare. New areas of study include pediatrics, bariatrics, pre- and postnatal care. The supervised clinical experience takes place in a regional nursing home. You must successfully complete both Theory and Clinical sections through Mount Airy College Center in order to receive certification. Program requirements: You must be 18 years or older, have a high school diploma or GED, a social security card, complete immunizations and titre tests (reviewed in class), and must pass a criminal background check. During the first class, you must pass basic reading and math exams. Students who do not pass the reading and math exams cannot continue and will receive a full refund. You must bring a credit or debit card to be used for criminal background pre-check for clinical placement ($49.50) and social security card to first class. Additional costs: immunization and titre tests ($150 - $300), MBON registry ($20) and full criminal background check ($57). Also required: blood pressure cuff, stethoscope, uniform, white shoes, and watch with second hand. When you complete the CNA course, you will be well-prepared and eligible to take the State Geriatric Examination to become a Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA). The GNA Exam fee is $95. 14.5 CEU's. No refunds five days prior to class starting.

Medicine Aide Training
This Maryland Board of Nursing approved course prepares persons working as Geriatric Nursing Assistants for the safe preparation, administration, and charting of routine medicines. Requires study time outside class and includes tests which the student must pass prior to starting the clinical experience. Prerequisites: Students must take the college reading and math placement tests, have a minimum of one year full-time current employment as a geriatric nursing assistant, submit a letter of recommendation from their DON, provide a copy of a current, active CNA/GNA certification and negative TB test/Chest Xray within the last year, and proof of Hepatitis B immunity or sign a waiver.

Meets the Maryland Board of Nursing renewal requirements for the Certified Medicine Aide. Designed to keep the practicing CMA informed and updated regarding new medications, non-parenteral drug administration, policies and practices, and medications needed by geriatric clients. Emphasis is on new drug therapies and the role of the medicine aide in providing safe and competent care. Upon registration, students must submit a copy of their current CNA/GNA certification, proof of successful completion of their initial CMA training course in Maryland, and must verify current CNA practice of at least 16 hours within the last 2 years, must verify active practice as a CNA/GNA/CMA in a licensed nursing home for at least 8 hours within the last 2 years, and must verify active practice as a CMA for 100 hours within the last two years.
